Resources for Rural & Small Communities
In early 2020, BC Healthy Communities conducted research to identify local government and health authority needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ways that they could support those needs through the recovery phase. Food security and insecurity was identified as a key concern. In response, BC Healthy Communities developed a series of Rapid Action Resources that explore food security and insecurity issues from a Healthy Communities lens, offering ideas for local government action in this area.
The Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation works to improve understanding of issues and opportunities that are of common interest to rural residents across Canada. Their members include rural leaders, rural organizations, development practitioners, government policy makers, researchers, students, and other stakeholders both in Canada and internationally.
This on-line toolkit from Ontario supports rural communities to develop their own healthy food plan. The Toolkit is an assessment and planning resource with three steps: i. Getting Started ii. Visioning Exercises iii. SWOT Analysis and Asset / Gap Mapping. Tools and case studies are included.

A guide to building food security in rural communities. The document opens with definitions and an argument for food security, followed by an outline of core ingredients for any food security program: people, mission, resources and administration. It provides examples of possible projects you may decide to explore, with resources for further guidance. It also considers the public policy context for your work (legislation and regulation).

A toolkit with different ideas for how local government and others can promote enjoyment of fruits and vegetables in remote communities including preservation, gardening, and others.

The Salt Spring Ag Alliance was founded by five key food stakeholders on the Island. Together they have developed a community abbattoir, and a produce centre is on the way. Their story illustrates what is possible in small places through formal partnerships.

“Eating our culture”: How the Neskonlith’s path to cultural revitalization has its roots in the land
Revitalizing a healthy natural environment takes a long-term approach that focuses not on a single patch of earth but on surveying the land broadly, looking upstream and reviving knowledge and practices that have been buried. The Neskonlith are applying this holistic, long-term strategy to improve environmental and community health by developing wide-ranging partnerships and focusing on knowledge sharing. Neskonlith leaders encourage a diverse, multi-sector assembly of allies and invite partnership and collaboration with all types of community groups.
