On July 7, 2017 the Province of BC announced a provincial state of emergency regarding the current wildfire situation. This is an unprecedented situation for our province, and one that is affecting many First Nations communities in the Interior Region.
During this stressful time, we at the FNHA are committed to sharing information and support with communities. Evacuations are underway in many areas, and with the hot, dry weather expected to continue, more families and communities may need to leave their homes for safety.

New signage is reminding smokers to butt out in City of Trail parks and other public spaces.
Council enacted the prohibition in January, and is now installing "Smoke Free Spaces" signs in areas that are frequented by families and children to raise awareness about the stricter regulations.
Coun. Lisa Pasin brought the smoke free initiative to the table in the spring of 2016.

The City of Surrey has provided seven parks with big boxes stocked with sports equipment and games for the summer.
“The whole point of the initiative is to get people active, get people moving,” explains Community Services Coordinator, Erin Balmer.
VICTORIA | The PlanH program has announced the 11 BC communities that will receive support for creating stronger social environments and resilient neighbourhoods.
Selected communities will receive $170,000 in grants and additional in-kind coaching support from the Healthy Communities Capacity Building Fund (HCCBF) for initiatives taking place in 2017 and 2018. The fund provides two streams of support for communities working with other partners to take action on improving social connectedness.
NELSON – At a Special Meeting on June 23, 2017, Council adopted a Clean Air and Smoking Regulation Bylaw.
This has been on Council’s list of bylaw priorities for a number of years. The new bylaw replaces two almost 30-year old bylaws. Staff have steadily progressed the updating of the City’s regulatory bylaws as directed by Council. Other regulatory bylaws that have been completed over the last two years include: Sanitary Regulations, Business Licensing, Waste Management and Short-term rentals.
The Alberni Clayoquot Health Network (ACHN) is collaboratively identifying and addressing ways of targeting housing and homelessness. The group hosted a Community Housing Forum in partnership with the Alberni Valley Community Stakeholders Initiative (AVCSI) to end homelessness with support from the PlanH program.
