For communities across Canada, 2020 was an especially trying year. However, the difficulties we are all facing continue to impact community members to varying degrees. Though inequities existed in our communities prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, current challenges have amplified these differences. Given all we have learned through our past and present experiences, how can we put equity into action to create greater well-being for all community members?

The 2020 Livable Cities Forum will offer a platform and venue to come together to discuss and workshop how to advance our work on climate change, while building resilience into our communities. Bringing together municipal practitioners, elected officials, resilience thinkers, and community experts, the Forum will offer both keynote presentations and breakout sessions where participants will be able to work through challenges and ideate solutions to these problems. Registration is complimentary.

Evidence from current climate science research suggests that anthropogenic activity will cause drastic changes to our environment, some of which have already been observed in British Columbia. These environmental impacts have consequences for human health, with natural hazards disproportionately impacting rural populations.

Hosted jointly by the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health (NCCDH) and the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID), speakers will discuss the development and application of a public health emergency preparedness framework, corresponding indicators and health equity prompts.

The framework and 67 corresponding indicators were developed by a Canadian team of public health researchers through a program of CIHR-funded research. The NCCID and NCCDH collaborated to develop a set of equity prompts for practitioners, decision makers and organizations to apply in emergency preparedness planning, response and recovery efforts.
